Smallpox
Smallpox is a highly contagious viral disease that was a leading cause of death in many societies until its eradication in 1980. Brought to the Americas by Europeans, it devastated Indigenous populations with no prior immunity. The Aztec Empire and Spanish Empire profiles note that a smallpox epidemic weakened Tenochtitlan during the Spanish conquest.
