12th century · 12th century

The Smaradahana ('Burning of the God of Love') is an Old Javanese kakawin poem written by Mpu Dharmaja at the court of Kediri in the early 12th century. It tells how Shiva burned Kama, the god of love, with his third eye, and how Kama and his wife were reborn in human form. It honours King Kameshvara as an incarnation of Kama.
