Maize
Maize is a cereal crop domesticated in Mesoamerica, the staple of the Aztec and other American civilisations. After the Spanish Empire's conquests it spread worldwide through the Columbian Exchange. It became an important crop in Africa, including in the lands of the Jolof and Rozvi empires, and in China under the Qing Empire, where it helped support population growth.
