Lake Titicaca

Lake Titicaca is a large freshwater lake in the high Andes on the border of Peru and Bolivia, at about 3,800 metres. Its shores were the heartland of the Tiwanaku civilisation and later of Aymara kingdoms such as the Lupaca and Pacajes. Inca tradition placed the origin of their founder Manco Capac at the lake, and its islands held major shrines.
