Lake Texcoco

Lake Texcoco was a large lake in the Valley of Mexico, now largely drained. The Aztecs founded Tenochtitlan on an island in the lake, connecting it to the shore by causeways. Its waters supported chinampa agriculture and canoe transport, which underpinned the economy of the Aztec Empire.
