1883–1942 · 20th century

Augustinas Voldemaras was a Lithuanian historian and politician who became the first prime minister of independent Lithuania in November 1918. After the military coup of December 1926 he again became prime minister, ruling alongside President Antanas Smetona, until Smetona dismissed him in 1929. His supporters in the Iron Wolf movement later attempted coups; he was deported by the Soviets in 1940 and died in a Moscow prison in 1942.
