1. 24 May

   Brooklyn Bridge opens across the East River

   After fourteen years of construction, the bridge linking Manhattan and Brooklyn opened. It was then the longest suspension bridge in the world, the first to use steel wire cables.

   5 June

   Express d'Orient makes its first run from Paris

   Georges Nagelmackers's luxury train service left Paris for Vienna. That October it was extended towards Constantinople, and as the Orient Express it became a legend of rail travel.

3. 26 August

   Krakatoa begins its cataclysmic eruption

   The volcano of Krakatoa in the Sunda Strait began its climactic eruption, culminating in explosions the next day heard thousands of kilometres away. Tsunamis killed more than 36,000 people.

   Treaty of Huế (1883)

   The Treaty of Huế of 25 August 1883, known as the Harmand Treaty after the French negotiator Jules Harmand, was imposed on the Nguyễn court after French forces stormed the forts guarding Huế.

   Treaty of Ancón

   The Treaty of Ancón, signed on 20 October 1883, ended the war between Chile and Peru in the War of the Pacific.

   Battle of Shaykan

   The Battle of Shaykan was fought on 3–5 November 1883 in the forest of Shaykan near El Obeid in Kordofan, Sudan.

   La Marsa Convention

   The La Marsa Convention was an agreement signed on 8 June 1883 between France and Ali III ibn al-Husayn, bey of Tunis.
