Mampuru II

d. 1883 · 19th century

Mampuru II was a claimant to the throne of the Pedi kingdom in present-day Limpopo, South Africa, and the rival of his half-brother Sekhukhune I. In 1882 he had Sekhukhune killed and took refuge with the Ndzundza Ndebele under Nyabela, whom the South African Republic then besieged. Captured in 1883, he was hanged in Pretoria, where the central prison now bears his name.
