Emir Abdelkader
Emir Abdelkader was an Algerian religious and military leader who led resistance to the French conquest of Algeria from 1832 to 1847. Chosen as emir by the tribes of western Algeria, he built a state with its own administration, taxes and army, and was recognised by France in the treaties of Desmichels and Tafna. He surrendered in 1847, was held in France, and in exile in Damascus protected thousands of Christians during the massacre of 1860.
