Mascara, Algeria
Mascara is a city in north-western Algeria, in the Tell Atlas south-east of Oran. Around 1700 it became the seat of the Ottoman Beylik of the West, until the bey moved to Oran after the Spanish left in 1792. In 1832 the tribes of the region proclaimed Abdelkader their emir near Mascara, and it served as his capital until the French took it in 1835.
