Battle of Isly
The Battle of Isly was fought on 14 August 1844 near the Isly river, close to Oujda in eastern Morocco, between a French army under Marshal Thomas-Robert Bugeaud and a much larger Moroccan force led by the sultan's son. The French victory ended Morocco's support for Abd al-Qadir's resistance in Algeria and exposed the weakness of the Moroccan army, opening the country to growing European pressure.
