Aimable Pélissier
Aimable Pélissier (1794–1864) was a French general who served for many years in the conquest of Algeria. In 1845 his troops asphyxiated hundreds of members of the Ouled Riah tribe sheltering in caves in the Dahra by lighting fires at the entrances, an act that caused outrage in France. He later commanded the French army in the Crimean War, took Sevastopol in 1855 and was made a marshal and Duke of Malakoff.
