Crimean War

1853–1856 · 19th century

The Crimean War was fought from 1853 to 1856 between the Russian Empire and an alliance of the Ottoman Empire, Britain, France and Sardinia. Much of the fighting centred on the siege of Sevastopol in Crimea. Russia's defeat exposed its backwardness and prompted major reforms, including the emancipation of the serfs in 1861.
