Battle of the Chernaya

1855 · 19th century · Also known as Battle of the Tchernaya · Part of the Crimean War

The Battle of the Chernaya was fought on 16 August 1855 on the Chernaya river near Sevastopol during the Crimean War. French and Sardinian troops beat off a Russian attack meant to relieve the besieged city, which fell three weeks later. It was the Sardinian contingent's main battle and helped Cavour win a place for Sardinia at the peace congress in Paris.
