Aimé Césaire
Aimé Césaire was a poet, playwright and politician from Martinique, one of the founders of the Négritude movement with Léopold Sédar Senghor and Léon Damas. His Notebook of a Return to the Native Land (1939) and Discourse on Colonialism (1950) became classics of anti-colonial writing. As mayor of Fort-de-France from 1945 to 2001 and a deputy in the French parliament, he sponsored the 1946 law that made Martinique an overseas department.
