Fort-de-France

Also known as Fort-Royal

Fort-de-France is the capital of Martinique, on a large bay on the island's west coast. Founded in the 17th century around Fort Saint-Louis as Fort-Royal, it became the seat of the colonial administration, while Saint-Pierre remained the commercial centre. It was renamed Fort-de-France in the early 19th century and became the island's main city after the eruption of Mount Pelée destroyed Saint-Pierre in 1902.
