Forte di Belvedere

1590–1595 · 16th century

The Forte di Belvedere is a fortress on the Boboli hill above Florence, built in 1590–1595 for Grand Duke Ferdinando I de' Medici to designs attributed to Bernardo Buontalenti. Overlooking the Pitti Palace and the city, it was meant both to defend Florence and to secure the Medici against internal revolt, and it reportedly held the dynasty's treasure. It is now used for exhibitions.
