Battle of Isandlwana

1879 · 19th century · Part of the Anglo-Zulu War

The Battle of Isandlwana was fought on 22 January 1879, at the start of the Anglo-Zulu War, when some 20,000 Zulu warriors overran the camp of Lord Chelmsford's centre column below Isandlwana hill. More than 1,300 British soldiers and African auxiliaries were killed. It was one of the worst defeats suffered by a British army against an indigenous force and caused a political shock in Britain.
