Masaniello

1620–1647 · 17th century · Also known as Tommaso Aniello

Masaniello, born Tommaso Aniello, was a Neapolitan fisherman who led the revolt of Naples against Spanish rule and a new tax on fruit in July 1647. For about ten days he dominated the city and negotiated with the viceroy, but he grew erratic and was murdered on 16 July 1647. The revolt continued and led to the short-lived Neapolitan Republic of 1647–1648.
