French protectorate of Annam
Origins
After the French captured Hanoi and the death of Emperor Tu Duc, the Harmand Treaty of 1883 and the Patenotre Treaty of 1884 forced the Nguyen dynasty to accept French protection. The central region, which Vietnamese called Trung Ky, became the protectorate of Annam, while Tonkin was placed under separate arrangements.
Rule and society
The emperors at Hue kept their palaces, mandarins and Confucian rituals, but a French résident supérieur controlled policy, taxes and appointments. France deposed emperors who resisted, including Ham Nghi, who led the Can Vuong movement from 1885, and later Thanh Thai and Duy Tan. Annam was poorer than Cochinchina, with coastal rice farming and highland plantations.
Decline and legacy
Annam was part of French Indochina from 1887. In March 1945 Japan ended French rule, and Bao Dai proclaimed the Empire of Vietnam. After his abdication to the Viet Minh in August 1945 the protectorate ceased to exist.
