Treaty of Huế (1884)
The Treaty of Huế of 6 June 1884, negotiated by the French diplomat Jules Patenôtre, confirmed French protection over Vietnam after the conquest of Tonkin. It replaced the harsher Harmand Treaty of 1883, leaving Annam under the Nguyễn emperor with French oversight and placing Tonkin under closer French control. China accepted the arrangement in 1885 after the Sino-French War.
