Occupation of Araucanía

1861–1883 · 19th century · Also known as Pacification of Araucanía

The Occupation of Araucanía was the Chilean military campaign and settlement that brought the independent Mapuche lands south of the Biobío river under Chilean rule between 1861 and 1883. Forts and towns were founded, Mapuche lands were confiscated and their people confined to reservations, while Argentina's Conquest of the Desert subdued the Mapuche east of the Andes.
