Occupation of Bosnia-Herzegovina

1878 · 19th century · Also known as occupation and pacification of Bosnia-Herzegovina

The occupation of Bosnia-Herzegovina was the entry of Austro-Hungarian troops into the Ottoman provinces of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1878, authorised by the Congress of Berlin. The army had to overcome armed local resistance during the pacification. Austria-Hungary administered the territory and formally annexed it in 1908, deepening tensions with Serbia.
