Eugen Leviné

1883–1919 · 20th century

Eugen Leviné was a Russian-born German Communist who took over the Bavarian Soviet Republic in April 1919, a week after its proclamation, and formed a Red Army. His government decreed the socialisation of banks and industry before government troops and Freikorps crushed it in early May. Leviné was tried for high treason and shot in Munich in June 1919.
