1867–1919 · 20th century

Kurt Eisner was a German journalist and Independent Social Democrat who led the revolution in Munich on 7 November 1918, proclaiming Bavaria a republic and ending Wittelsbach rule. He became the first premier of the Free State of Bavaria. His assassination by a right-wing nationalist in February 1919 set off the upheaval that led to the short-lived Bavarian Soviet Republic.
