Eugen Zintgraff

1858–1897 · 19th century

Eugen Zintgraff was a German explorer and colonial agent in Kamerun. In 1889 he reached the Bamenda grassfields and formed an alliance with Fon Galega I of Bali-Nyonga, aiming to recruit labour and open trade routes for German colonial interests. In 1891 his expedition with Bali allies was defeated by the Mankon and their neighbours, but the alliance made Bali the main German partner in the region.
