Richard Wagner

1813–1883 · 19th century

Richard Wagner was a German composer and theatre director whose operas, which he called music dramas, transformed European music. His works include Tristan und Isolde, Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, the four-part Ring cycle and Parsifal. King Ludwig II of Bavaria became his patron in 1864, paid his debts and helped finance the festival theatre at Bayreuth, opened in 1876. His antisemitic writings have overshadowed his legacy.
