Der Blaue Reiter

1911–1914 · 20th century · Also known as The Blue Rider, Blue Rider

Der Blaue Reiter, "the Blue Rider", was a group of artists formed in Munich in 1911 by Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc, joined by painters such as August Macke, Gabriele Münter and Paul Klee. Its exhibitions and its almanac of 1912 promoted expressive colour and abstraction and made Munich a centre of modern art. The group broke up with the First World War, in which Macke and Marc were killed.
