Courland
Courland is a historical region of western Latvia, lying between the Gulf of Riga and the Baltic Sea and including Liepāja and Ventspils. Conquered by the Livonian Order in the thirteenth century, it became the Duchy of Courland and Semigallia under Polish-Lithuanian suzerainty in 1561 and passed to Russia in 1795. Predominantly Lutheran, it has formed part of Latvia since the country's independence.
