West Russian Volunteer Army

1919 · 20th century · Also known as Bermontians

The West Russian Volunteer Army was a force formed in Courland in 1919 under Pavel Bermondt-Avalov, combining anti-Bolshevik Russian former prisoners of war with German Freikorps troops who had stayed in the Baltic. Nominally fighting the Bolsheviks, it attacked the Latvian government at Riga in October 1919, but was driven back in November and defeated by Lithuanian forces near Radviliškis, and its remnants withdrew to Germany by December.
