Latvian Riflemen

1915–1920 · 20th century · Also known as Latvian Red Riflemen

The Latvian Riflemen were Latvian units formed in the Russian Imperial Army in 1915 to defend Latvia against Germany. After heavy losses many turned to the Bolsheviks, and in 1917–1918 the Red Latvian Riflemen became one of the most reliable forces of the Soviet regime. They backed the Iskolat government in 1917 and spearheaded the Red Army's invasion of Latvia, which created the Latvian Socialist Soviet Republic in 1918–1919.
