Christmas Battles

1916–1917 · 20th century · Part of the First World War

The Christmas Battles were a Russian offensive against German positions near Riga in late December 1916 and January 1917, in which Latvian Riflemen units broke through the German lines in heavy winter fighting. The breakthrough was not exploited by the Russian command, and the Riflemen suffered several thousand casualties. The battles became a central episode in Latvian national memory and military tradition.
