Lāčplēsis Day
Lāčplēsis Day is a Latvian day of remembrance held on 11 November for those who fell fighting for the country's independence. It commemorates the defeat of Pavel Bermondt-Avalov's West Russian Volunteer Army at Riga in November 1919 and takes its name from Lāčplēsis, the bear-slaying hero of Andrejs Pumpurs's national epic. It is marked by candles placed along the walls of Riga Castle and at war memorials.
