Courland Pocket

1944–1945 · 20th century · Part of the Second World War

The Courland Pocket was the area of western Latvia where German Army Group North, later renamed Army Group Courland, was cut off by the Red Army from October 1944. Repeated Soviet offensives failed to destroy it, and around 200,000 German troops held out until the general surrender in May 1945. Latvian soldiers fought on both sides in the battles there.
