Latvian Legion

1943–1945 · 20th century

The Latvian Legion was a formation of the Waffen-SS created in 1943 under German occupation, made up mainly of Latvian conscripts in the 15th and 19th Waffen Grenadier Divisions. It fought the Red Army on the Eastern Front, and the 19th Division held out in the Courland Pocket until the German surrender in May 1945. Its legacy and an annual commemoration on 16 March remain controversial in Latvia and abroad.
