Waffen-SS

1940–1945 · 20th century

The Waffen-SS was the armed wing of the Nazi SS, which grew from a few regiments into an army of some 38 divisions during the Second World War. It took in volunteers and conscripts from occupied and allied countries, including Latvian and Estonian legions. Its units committed many war crimes, and the Nuremberg tribunal declared the SS a criminal organisation.
