Aizsargi

1919–1940 · 20th century · Also known as Aizsargu organizācija

The Aizsargi (Defenders) were a Latvian volunteer paramilitary home guard founded in March 1919, during the War of Independence, to protect local communities and support the army. With tens of thousands of members, they became an important prop of Kārlis Ulmanis, who relied on them in his coup of 15 May 1934. The organisation was dissolved after the Soviet occupation in 1940, and many members were deported or killed.
