Aizu
Aizu is the western part of Fukushima Prefecture in northern Japan, a mountain basin centred on the castle town of Aizuwakamatsu. It was fought over by the Ashina, Date and other clans in the 16th century and in the Edo period formed a strong domain loyal to the Tokugawa shoguns. In the Boshin War of 1868 its castle withstood a month-long siege by the forces of the new Meiji government before surrendering.
