Edo period

The Edo period is the era of Japanese history from 1603 to 1868 under the rule of the Tokugawa Shogunate, named after its capital Edo. It was a long period of internal peace, restricted foreign contact, urban growth and cultural flourishing, during which the samurai became largely a bureaucratic class.
