Daimyo
The daimyo were the great feudal lords of Japan who ruled domains and commanded samurai retainers. Under the Tokugawa Shogunate about 260 daimyo governed their domains semi-autonomously, subject to shogunal regulation and the system of alternate attendance in Edo. The daimyo domains were abolished in 1871 after the Meiji Restoration.
