Echigo Province
Echigo Province was a province of Japan on the Sea of Japan coast, corresponding to most of modern Niigata Prefecture. In the 16th century it was the power base of Uesugi Kenshin, who ruled from Kasugayama Castle and drew wealth from ramie cloth and mines. Under the Tokugawa shogunate it was divided among several domains, including Nagaoka, and in 1868 these joined the northern alliance in the Boshin War.
