Kantō region

Also known as Kanto region

The Kantō region is the largest plain of Japan, in eastern Honshu, now covering Tokyo and six surrounding prefectures. Historically it comprised eight provinces and was the base of the warrior class: the Kamakura shogunate ruled from there, the Kamakura and Koga kubo governed it for the Ashikaga, and the Later Hojo and then the Tokugawa made it their power base, with Edo as their capital.
