Satake clan domain

1500 CE – 1602 CE (approx.) · capital Ota, later Mito

The domain of the Satake of Hitachi, an old warrior house that dominated northeastern Kanto in the Sengoku period before its transfer to Akita in 1602.

Origins

The Satake, a branch of the Seiwa Genji, had been established in Hitachi since the 12th century. After long internal conflicts, they restored their unity around 1500 and from their castle at Ota expanded across the province.

Rule and society

Satake Yoshishige, nicknamed the demon of Hitachi, fought the Later Hojo for control of the northern Kanto and allied with neighbours to resist them. His son Yoshinobu supported Toyotomi Hideyoshi, joined the siege of Odawara in 1590, and was confirmed in a large fief across Hitachi, moving his seat to Mito.

Decline and legacy

Yoshinobu remained neutral at Sekigahara in 1600, and Tokugawa Ieyasu punished him in 1602 by transferring the clan to the much smaller Kubota Domain in Dewa, where the Satake ruled until 1871.
