Seiwa Genji
The Seiwa Genji are the branch of the Minamoto clan descended from Emperor Seiwa, who reigned in the 9th century. Settled as provincial warriors in eastern Japan, they produced the founder of the Kamakura shogunate, Minamoto no Yoritomo, and later the Ashikaga shoguns. Many warrior houses, including the Satake, Takeda and Nitta, traced their descent from the Seiwa Genji, and the Tokugawa also claimed it.
