Kanun
Kanun was the body of secular law issued by Ottoman sultans, alongside Islamic sharia. Suleiman the Magnificent, known as Kanuni or the Lawgiver, systematised it in codes governing criminal justice, land tenure and taxation. The site contrasts it with the Sikh Empire, which had no comparable codified legal system.
