Land tenure
Land tenure refers to the rules and arrangements by which land is held, used, granted and transferred. In many empires, grants of land or of the revenue from land were used to reward soldiers, officials and religious institutions in return for service. The site discusses such systems in the Ottoman Empire, the Ethiopian Empire, the Darfur Sultanate and the Median Empire, where they shaped fiscal and military organisation.
