State
Sikh Empire
The Sikh Empire was a state in the Punjab founded by Maharaja Ranjit Singh at the start of the nineteenth century, with its capital at Lahore. It extended to Kashmir, Multan and Peshawar and maintained a powerful, partly Western-trained army. After Ranjit Singh's death in 1839 it fell into factional turmoil and was annexed by the British after the Second Anglo-Sikh War of 1848–1849.
