Sikh gurus

1469–1708 · 15th century · Also known as Ten Gurus

The Sikh gurus were the ten spiritual masters who founded and led Sikhism, from Guru Nanak, born in 1469, to Guru Gobind Singh, who died in 1708. They compiled the scripture, founded centres such as Amritsar and, under the later gurus, organised the community to resist Mughal persecution. Guru Gobind Singh created the Khalsa and declared the scripture, the Guru Granth Sahib, his successor.
