Cis-Sutlej states
The Cis-Sutlej states were the Sikh and other states of the Malwa region of Punjab between the Sutlej and Yamuna rivers, among them Patiala, Nabha and Jind. To avoid absorption by Ranjit Singh's Sikh Empire, they accepted British protection in 1809, and the Treaty of Amritsar with Ranjit Singh that year fixed the Sutlej as his border. Many smaller states were later annexed, while the largest survived as princely states until 1948.
