Kalsia State

1760 CE – 1948 CE (approx.) · capital Chhachhrauli

A Sikh princely state on the Punjab–Haryana border with its capital at Chhachhrauli, founded by a sardar of the Karorsinghia misl.

Origins

Gurbakhsh Singh, a Sandhu Jat of the village of Kalsia near Lahore and a member of the Karorsinghia misl, took territory south of the Sutlej around 1760. His son Jodh Singh enlarged the holding, and the family made Chhachhrauli its seat.

Rule and society

Kalsia entered British protection with the other Cis-Sutlej states in 1809. It was a small Sikh-ruled state with a mixed Sikh, Hindu and Muslim population, ruled by a Raja and supervised through the Punjab States Agency.

Decline and legacy

Ravi Sher Singh acceded to India in 1947, and in 1948 Kalsia was merged into the Patiala and East Punjab States Union. Its former lands are in Yamunanagar district of Haryana.
